Launched the Campus for Research Excellence and Technological Enterprise (CREATE) today, a handsome building at NUS’ University Town. It houses research labs from ten leading R&D institutions including MIT, Technical University of Munich, ETH (Switzerland), and Shanghai Jiao Tong University.
CREATE is a “collaboratory”, which makes it easy for the different teams to work with one another and with our own universities and research institutions. Hopefully these interactions will spark creative insights and new discoveries, and help us build and root a well-integrated R&D eco-system in Singapore.
Also launched the second National Innovation Challenge (NIC). An NIC is a way for us to focus research on a big and complex challenge facing Singapore. This NIC, on “Land and Liveability”, will study how we can create new space, e.g. by building underground, and how we can use our existing space more creatively. Then our economy can grow, and we can all enjoy a highly liveable city. – LHL
